Keeping Your Identity Private

I am very proud of my students!  They have been working very hard over these last few months of school.  I am very impressed with the progress that everyone has made in their blogging skills and understanding different digital citizenship concepts.  This week we talked about staying safe online and the importance of protecting our identity by keeping it private.  Students reflected on the question-What kinds of information should I keep to myself when I use the Internet?

As a class we discussed different reasons why it is important not to share our personal information with people we do not know in person and online.  We also talked about what to do when you play a game online and when the game asks you to create a username.  We reflected on previous lessons that explored safety and remember that they need to talk to an adult when a game or website asks for personal information or if you are having a problem online.  Students decided that personal information is your: name, age, phone number, and address.  Together we explored the difference between a good username and a username that gives out too much personal information.  After brainstorming students were able to create usernames that they could use to protect their identity and stay safe online! Learning About Odd and Even Numbers

We have been learning a lot about odd and even numbers!  My students love to sing the odd and even song! 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 Even Steven’s Really Great! 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 Odd Todd Is Super Kind!  Today we also listened and viewed the Even Steven and Odd Todd story written by Kathryn Cristaldi.  Throughout the video we paused it to count and find the odd and even numbers.

My students also love the Odd Todd and Even Steven song on Youtube.  They have a lot of fun singing along and spotting the different numbers in the video.

Remembrance Day

I was very proud of my students these last few days.  On Monday we talked about Remembrance Day and the importance of remembering all the men and women who protected us and fought for our freedom.  On Monday we had a great conversation about what freedom means and why it is special to live in Canada.  I also showed my students a video that has pictures from World War One and World War Two as well as recent pictures of Canadians deployed over seas.  Along with the pictures Roland Majeau sings a song called ‘Soliders Cry.’

 I choose this video because I wanted my students to know that men and women protected us during both World Wars and that there are still men and women protecting us today.  After watching this video led to a lot of great questions from my students.

We also watched the video of Terry Kelly’s song ‘A Pittance of Time. We had a good conversation about the characters in this music video.  We had a discussion about the importance of taking the time to remember and say thank you to our Veterans everyday.  As a class we talked about the moment of silence that will be happening during our school Remembrance Day ceremony and what will be happening during the ceremony.

Today we went over to the Gordon F. Kells High School for our school Remembrance Day ceremony.  During the ceremony we heard some amazing speakers, watched a video, some high school students performed a skit using a shadow screen, and the high school band played a touching song.  A terrific musician from our community played the Last Post and Reveille during our service as well.  A few high school students did a beautiful job reciting the poem In Flanders Fields.  My students learned that it is the 100th anniversary of John McCrae’s poem In Flanders Fields.  In the afternoon my class discussed what they learned from the ceremony.  After we discussed what good artists do when they create pieces of artwork then students have time to create a Remembrance Day poster.  Once students finished their posters they were given time to write a new blog post entry on their own blogs about Remembrance Day.  A few students ran out of time to finish their post so they will complete it very soon.  I encourage you to check out my students individual blogs so you can read their Remembrance Day posts and see the posters that they created.
