On Thursday our class had a very fun day and were lucky to learn from some great guests! In the morning our class and Miss Farrow’s grade two class went to the library to listen to an author and an illustrator read the stories that they had been apart of creating. The first story we listened to was Grandma’s Quilts written by Saskatchewan author and teacher Sheryl Kennett Garrett. Both classes enjoyed listening to Sheryl read her story and were excited to see the quilts from the trunk that went along with her story. We had a great conversation about grandparents and learned about quilting.

Then we had the privilege of listening to Saskatchewan illustrator Ione Krainyk read us the story called Penelope The House of Pretend. Ione along with her sisters created this true story of a playhouse that their grandfather helped build. Our class found out that their playhouse now is in Fairlight, Saskatchewan. Everyone enjoyed listening to her story and discussing playing! Both classes were excited to see the pretend food that Ione created for her family to use when they play pretend in the play house.

This week students in our school were given the opportunity to try out to be a part of Missoula Children’s Theatre for the week. Two directors came from Missoula with a truck and trailer filled with a set and costumes and teach students a play/musical in five days and then they present it to the community! Both of the directors have been amazing so far and are very kind to all of the staff and students. During Wednesday and Thursday the directors put on workshops for different grades in the school. On Thursday afternoon our class and Miss Farrow’s grade two class went back to the library to take part in The Marvelous Mini-Musical workshop. This workshop taught us about how to be a performer and we prepared a musical number. After we got into groups and performed the mini musical for each other! Students learned about lyrics, choreography, and rhythm. Everyone had so much fun!

Come watch students at our school perform tonight in Aladdin at 7:00pm Friday, October 23rd in our school gym!!
Looks like some wonderful learning opportunities for students. It’s always great when artists visit the classroom to share their stories. I love the picture of the performers getting into the act!
“Thank you Kelly for responding back” (Agent #1). “Thanks for writing”(Agent #7). “We did learn a lot about musicals and being an author” (Agent #5).
